20 Essays for 20 Years of Training Writers

Free My Writing Journey anthology – 20 essays for writers

Where we started 20 years ago...

In 2005, the Writers’ College was just a fledgling writing school: one tutor, one journalism course and a belief that ordinary people could write extraordinary stories if they were given the tools and the occasional nudge in their Inbox. We didn’t know if it would fly. We just knew what writing meant to us, and we wanted to pass on the skills.

Fast forward twenty years and we’re a bustling team of around 40 award-winning tutors, teaching more than 35 specialised courses in creative writing, non-fiction, business writing and all sorts of niche corners of the craft.

We’ve trained thousands of writers through our sister schools in the UK, South Africa and New Zealand. At least fifty of our alumni have been published in the last five years. And every single week, we still get to watch people step into the wild, brave business of putting words on a page.

Thanking you from the bottom of our hearts...

To celebrate this hard-won milestone, and to thank you for walking with us, we’ve gathered something special for you.

This anthology, compiled by editors Michelle Mocumbi and Andrew Murton, brings together twenty of the best essays from our My Writing Journey competition.

The writers come from all over the world – big cities, small towns, late-night kitchen tables. They write about the real business of becoming a writer: the thrill of a breakthrough, the punch of rejection, the slog of sitting down yet again when they’d rather be anywhere else.

Wherever you are on your own writing path, may these stories about the journey to mastery keep you company. This is our gift to you. May they remind you that all writers, even the famous ones, have wanted to give up at times. Their success is largely because they didn’t.
